A Spanish official once remarked, "We Spanish have a sickness in the heart that only gold can cure".
When Spain controlled Mexico and all lands to the north and south, there was a need for the gente to exercise caution. The power by the official ruling class was absolute and the lands they controlled were vast . Greed, jealousy, deception, and death were commonplace.

During this era, the Jesuit Padres, Franciscan Frays, and Dominican Order of the Roman Catholic Church went into the wilderness to introduce Christianity to the Native people.

In the late 1600's, the then King of Spain placed northern Mexico, Arizona and California under the complete control of the Society of Jesus. The Jesuit Order took control of vast un charted lands free of Spanish governors for nearly a century. During that period, many promises for help were being broken by the governors in Mexico. The funds for maintaining established missions and for establishing new missions was slow to appear.

In 1769, King Carlos 111 of Spain, expelled the Jesuit Order from all of Spain's possessions in the world. It appears that an unannounced Spanish official had reported discovering huge stacks of Jesuit marked gold and silver bars waiting to be transported to a unknown location from a Jesuit Mission site.

It was rumored that the Jesuits were also secretly searching for the ancestral home of the Aztec Nation, a place of wealth, a place called Atzlan.
